This course invites students to embark on a journey through the world of film, examining its rich history and diverse genres while honing critical viewing skills. We will explore the evolution of cinema from its inception to contemporary trends, highlighting key movements, landmark films, and influential filmmakers who have shaped the medium.

Topics Include:
  • Film History: Delve into the chronological development of film, exploring major milestones, technological advancements, and cultural impacts from silent films to modern blockbusters.
  • Genre Analysis: Investigate the characteristics and conventions of various film genres, including horror, film noir, westerns, and science fiction, while considering how genre shapes audience expectations and narrative structure.
  • Structure and Narrative: Analyze the fundamental elements of storytelling in film, including plot, character development, and theme. Students will learn to identify narrative techniques and structures that create compelling cinematic experiences.
  • Visual and Audio Design: Examine the crucial roles of cinematography, production design, editing, and sound in shaping a film's mood and message.
  • Viewing Films with a Critical Eye: Develop analytical skills to engage with films thoughtfully. Students will learn to critique films not only for their entertainment value but also for their artistic, cultural, and social significance.
By the end of this course, students will cultivate a deeper appreciation for film as an art form, equipping them with the tools to analyze and discuss films in a meaningful way. Registration must be completed online.
