Building Leaders: ODA's Eighth Grade Leadership Retreat

The annual Eighth Grade Leadership Retreat at Out-of-Door is a pivotal experience for the School's oldest middle school students. Designed to prepare them for leadership responsibilities, the Retreat spans two days and takes place at both DaySpring Conference Center in Parrish, FL, and on the Uihlein Campus.

During the retreat, students engage in a wide range of activities to foster group cohesion, develop leadership skills, and ensure that fun is also part of the learning process. At DaySpring, students challenge themselves on ropes courses, participate in team-building exercises, and work on communication and problem-solving through various group activities. Back on the Uihlein Campus, they tackle physical challenges, navigate obstacle courses, and enjoy friendly competitions, all contributing to their growth as leaders.

Now in its third decade, the Retreat has become a cornerstone of ODA’s Middle School experience. The lessons learned remind students of their inner strength and perseverance, helping them navigate academic and personal challenges throughout the school year. By encouraging students to step out of their comfort zones, this eighth grade tradition plays a crucial role in boosting their confidence and motivation in the classroom and beyond.
